Diploma in Shipbuilding Technology
The Shipbuilding department conducts the four year diploma programme in Shipbuilding Engineering . This diploma and the Institute itself was founded to educate and train students to meet the technical manpower requirements of the Shipbuilding Industries located at Goa. Today, in addition to this objective, these students are employed in the Merchant Marine, Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, Surveyors as well as in shipyards both in India and abroad.
The faculty comprises fully qualified Naval Architects and Mechanical Engineers and is presently headed by a Marine Engineer who has post graduate qualifications in Marine Engineering and MOT Class I certificate.
The course curriculum comprises of a balance of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering subjects and includes basic and foundation courses of the sciences, mathematics and engineering that are necessary to equip the students to meet the challenges of working in shipbuilding industry or afloat ships. The programme includes two “Inplant” training terms each of six months duration, at various shipyards in India

Diploma in Mechanical Engineering
The department of Mechanical Engineering of Institute of Shipbuilding Technology started its activities since the inception of the Institute in the year 1981. The department initially started with skeleton staff catering to the requirement of diploma in Shipbuilding Engineering. The department files full strength in the year 1990, with the introduction of a 3 year diploma course in Mechanical Engineering. The department which started with one staff member in the year 1981 has 8 staff members on date.
The department has a well qualified staff with four staff members having acquired Post graduate qualification, while two are pursuing higher education at Masters level. The department possesses the academic expertise in the under mentioned which it can share with the industry.

The department under its umbrella has five laboratories. These laboratories have some of the latest test rigs used in Engineering institutions to impart of the art knowledge & skills to the student. In addition to providing formal training to the students of Institute of Shipbuilding Technology, Goa, the department also offers help to the community polytechnic wing of I.S.B.T. to provide informal training for the rural youth in Goa. The department also provides the testing facilities to various industries in and around Goa through its Material Testing Laboratory. As such there is a scope to increase the interaction of industry and Institute to identify more areas of use of Laboratory facilities for the benefit of students, institute & industry.

The department over a period of last 10 to 15 years has developed excellent support with the local industries in Goa. Department regularly organizes field visits of students to these industries & takes up industry based project work for students. The staff members of the department associate with the industry through guidance of industry based Project Work organization of Continuing Education Programmes for Industry Personnel and consultancy work.
The department with the help of expert faculty from industry and product manufacturers organizes refresher programmes for Industry Personnel in different areas. Some of such programmes which have been organized by the department till date are
a) The day seminar on “Corrosion and Painting”
b) Three day seminar on “Welding Technology”
c) Short term courses on “Barge engine operation & Maintenance”
d) Four day seminar on “Welding and Fabrication – a knowledge update
With a highly qualified staff, well equipped laboratories and through the experience gained over the year. Mechanical Engineering department is geared up to meet the academic expectations of the students and the Industry.

Diploma in Electronics and Communication Engineering
Diploma Course in Electronics with specialisation in Marine Electronics was introduced in the year 1995-96 with an intake capacity of 30 students under World Bank Assistsed Project. Later on a need was felt for changing the nomenclature of the course to Diploma in Electronic & Communication Engineering. The department has a staff strength of seven and five well-equipped laboratories, viz.

3. Digital Electronics Laboratory
4. Electronics Laboratory
5. Instrumentation and Telecommunication Laboratory
The Present curriculum caters to the Electronics Engineering Industry at large. Field visits form an integral part of the students academic activities. Project work gives more emphasis on practical hands-on-training imparted to them. Some of our students are employed in reputed companies like Elcome Marine, D-Link, Siemens, Zenith Computers, Finolex, etc. Regular interaction is maintained with the industries for a constant update of the fast changing industrial scenario.
The Electrical section of the department handles the Power-house and the Electrical Maintenance works at the Institute. Department has also successfully designed and conducted a one-week course on ‘Electrical Safety’ for transhipper technician and two days programme on "Introduction to PLC" for Industry personnel. The department staff also conducts training and examinations for the Institute of Maritime Studies, Community Polytechnic Wing of the institute and the ITI trainees. The department plans to offer specialization in a few more fields in the near future and training programmes on introduction to Digital technology and Microprocessors, EPROM programming and PCB fabrication as per industry requirements.
